Welcome

Sarah Jane Hartney

Artist, photographer and architect

I moved to Basel in Spring 2006 after living in Spain for three and a half years. I have been fortunate to live in several countries and continents from Hong Kong (where I worked as an architect for seven years) and Taiwan to Australia, and Spain.

Originally born in USA, I grew up in Yorkshire, in the north of England. I trained as an architect in Sussex whilst spending several years working for a London based practice. I always had the desire to travel and decided to take the opportunity and look for work in Asia. After two weeks I started working for a Hong Kong practice and moved into one of the local neighbourhoods on the island.

I have always sketched and painted and spent a lot of any spare time drawing the people and architecture. Living in these very different cultures I found it easier to capture the atmosphere, the light and the people through sketches and paintings rather than purely with photographs.

Since then photography has become an important part of my work and is incorporated in many areas from digital art to collage and mixed media. Each artwork can be traced back to a series of early sketches made in situ.

When I first arrived in Basel I spent many delightful mornings wandering through the squares and back streets sketching, trying to capture first impressions. The drawing of Mittlere Brucke is based on several of these sketches drawn in the early morning with the mist still floating over the Rhine. I look for details, research the history behind them and try to incorporate them into the picture.

I have been involved in several exhibitions with work currently in many private collections in the USA and Europe. Many clients keep in touch through my website and when not working on commissions I try to attend the fairs in the area where I can meet potential buyers and discuss the artwork directly.

Please feel free to send me any comments you may have and I hope you enjoy the artwx....
